OPERATION PHANTOM SENTRY
Task Organization:
- 1-183rd Infantry Regiment (Main Effort - Air Assault / Infantry Operations)
- 211th Combat Aviation Brigade (CAB) (Supporting Effort - Close Combat Attack / CAS)
1. SITUATION
- a. Enemy Forces: Enemy elements hold defensive positions at Objective Ripcord, the Da Nang Airbase, and adjacent industrial complexes (Factory and Sawmill). Known enemy assets include BMP armored vehicles, fixed emplacements, and light infantry defenses.
- b. Friendly Forces:
- 1-183rd IN conducts air assault operations to seize key objectives.
- 211th CAB provides Close Air Support (CAS) and attack aviation support.
- c. Civilians / Non-Combatants: Limited civilian population present in Da Nang town.
2. MISSION
1-183rd Infantry Regiment conducts an air assault on Objective Ripcord to seize the base, and on order / time permitting, conducts follow-on assaults to seize the Factory and Sawmill objectives in order to destroy enemy combat power in the Sector of Operations.
3. EXECUTION
a. Commander’s Intent
- Purpose: Neutralize enemy mechanized and fortified threats to secure Objectives Ripcord, Factory, and Sawmill while preventing collateral damage to civilian areas.
- Key Tasks:
- 211th CAB neutralizes pre-designated enemy BMPs and emplacements prior to infantry insertion.
- 1-183rd IN inserts via air assault and seizes Objective Ripcord.
- 1-183rd IN secures follow-on objectives (Factory, Sawmill) if time permits.
- Enforce strict Rules of Engagement (ROE) regarding civilian areas and controlled munitions.
- Endstate: Objective Ripcord (and secondary objectives) secured; enemy assets destroyed; zero civilian casualties or collateral damage in No-Fire Areas.
b. Concept of Operations
- Phase I (Prep & Shaping): 211th CAB engages pre-designated BMPs and fixed emplacements at Objective Ripcord using AGM-114 Hellfires and 30mm chain guns.
- Phase II (Main Assault): 1-183rd IN conducts air assault insertion directly onto Objective Ripcord and systematically seizes the facility.
- Phase III (Exploitation - Contingent): If time and fuel permit, 1-183rd IN moves to secure the Factory and Sawmill locations.
c. Tasks to Subordinate Units
- 211th Combat Aviation Brigade (CAB):
- Conduct pre-assault CAS on pre-designated BMPs and emplacements at Obj Ripcord prior to 1-183rd IN insertion.
- Armament primary loadout: AGM-114 missiles and 30mm chain guns.
- Provide Terminal Attack Control compliant support over Da Nang Airbase under Type 1 Control parameters.
- 1-183rd Infantry Regiment:
- Conduct primary assault to secure and hold Objective Ripcord.
- Be prepared (BPT) to conduct secondary assaults on the Factory and Sawmill locations upon order.
d. Coordinating Instructions & Rules of Engagement (ROE)
- No-Fire Area (NFA):
- An NFA is established around the town of Da Nang to protect the local civilian population.
- Restricted Munitions in NFA: 30mm, 40mm, 81mm, 155mm, and all other High Explosive (HE) munitions are STRICTLY PROHIBITED within the Da Nang NFA.
- Da Nang Airbase Restrictions:
- Aviation and surface assets may utilize 30mm, 40mm, 60mm mortar, and limited AGM-114 strikes on the Da Nang Airbase.
- Control Requirement: Targets on Da Nang Airbase MUST be engaged under Type 1 Control only (JTAC/FAC visual acquisition of both target and attack aircraft required).
4. SUSTAINMENT
- Class V (Ammunition): Prioritize precision-guided munitions (AGM-114) for heavy emplacements.
- MEDEVAC: Standard casualty evacuation procedures via 211th CAB air assets on call.
5. COMMAND AND SIGNAL
- Air-to-Ground Frequencies: TBD
- JTAC Call Sign: Felix (Mandatory for Type 1 engagements on Airbase)
- Challenge and Password: Standard SOI in effect.
