OPERATIONS ORDER: OPERATION JUNGLE FURY (REV. 1)
References: Map Sheet: Region 1-A (Jungle Operations)
Time Zone Used Throughout Order: EST
Task Organization:
- Main Effort: 1st Platoon, A Co, 183rd Infantry Regiment
- Opposing Force (OPFOR): 1st Platoon, C Co, 72nd Infantry Battalion
1. SITUATION
a. Enemy Forces
- Composition and Disposition: Elements of Charlie Company, 72nd Infantry Battalion are currently operating in the vicinity of My Lai and the Sawmill. They are confirmed to be at platoon strength.
- Capabilities: OPFOR is equipped with organic small arms and one (1) crew-served weapon system (simulated heavy/medium machine gun) capable of establishing a deadly interlocking field of fire. They are utilizing Simulation (SIM) Ammunition and are dug into established defensive positions leveraging the dense jungle canopy for maximum concealment.
- Most Likely Course of Action (MLCOA): The enemy will deploy their crew-served weapon along the primary approach avenue at the Sawmill to pin down friendly forces, while using a small security detachment near My Lai to trigger early warning and trip lines.
b. Friendly Forces
- Higher Mission: Alpha Company, 183rd Inf Reg finalizes jungle qualification by destroying remaining insurgent pockets in Sector Northwest to secure the regional economic corridor.
- Adjacent Units: Charlie Company, 183rd Inf Reg remains Battalion Reserve at FOB Tusker.
c. Weather Considerations
- Time: Early morning, dawn.
- Weather: Low level dew/fog.
2. MISSION
Alpha Company (1st Platoon, 183rd Inf Reg) inserts from FOB Tusker no later than 1610, moves Northwest to clear My Lai and seize the Sawmill in order to conduct a Platoon Battle Drill 2 (BD2 - Action on Contact / Platoon Attack) to suppress and destroy elements of C Co, 72nd Inf Bn, knocking out their crew-served weapon, and finalizes jungle warfare certification.
3. EXECUTION
Commander's Intent
The purpose of this operation is to validate platoon-level jungle tactics, communication under dense canopy, and the rapid execution of Battle Drill 2 against an entrenched enemy machine gun position using SIM rounds. Succession requires isolating the crew-served weapon, fixing it with a heavy base of fire, and flanking the position before it can displace.
a. Concept of Operations
The operation will be executed in three phases:
- Phase I: Preparation and Staging: Final inspection of SIM rounds, weapon conversion checks, and safety briefings at FOB Tusker.
- Phase II: Movement to Objective: Infiltration Northwest through dense jungle terrain. 1st Platoon takes point, clearing My Lai as a secondary objective/Check Point, followed by 2nd Platoon.
- Phase III: Actions on the Objective: Upon contact at the Sawmill, the platoon will immediately find cover, return fire, and fix the enemy/crew-served weapon in place. The supporting platoon will rapidly execute a flanking maneuver to overrun the machine gun nest and destroy remaining OPFOR.
b. Tasks to Subordinate Units
- 1st Platoon (183rd): Secure route Northwest, clear My Lai, act as base of fire element to suppress the OPFOR crew-served weapon upon contact at the Sawmill.
- OPFOR (C Co, 72nd Bn): Establish realistic defensive positions at the Sawmill utilizing the crew-served weapon. Position early warning outposts at My Lai. Adhere to training safety constraints.
c. Coordinating Instructions
- Timeline:
- PCI/PCC (Pre-Combat Inspections): 1545
